Going into Sunday morning's race, I was not expecting big things. On practice Saturday, I couldn't go more than three miles before feeling muscle fatigue. Sunday looked to be a long day for me. On the other hand, I had installed a new top end and the bike was running great. I got my usual mediocre start, but unlike the usual, I actually enjoyed the start. I love the sand, and with seventeen 125s screaming and throwing up sand, it was fun! I pulled through the barrels in 8th at the end of the first lap, not too great. My fears of Saturday had been realized, as I started to get winded about four miles in. I proceed to coast for the remainder of the first lap, and all of the second. I was in 6th at the end of the 2nd lap, when I got a second wind and picked up the pace a couple of notches. It was at about this point that J55, Curtis Pace, and I began to re-enact "The tortoise and the hare". He'd come screaming up behind me and pass me, then I'd come up on him on the ground a few corners later. This reoccurred a couple of times for the next lap-and-a-half, before I finally got by him for good midway through the fourth lap. I was in 5th at this point, and that's where I finished, being passed (thankfully) by the overall leader a mile or so before the finish. I've got to get myself into better condition, and maintain a consistent pace if I'm to reach my goal of being in the top six at year-end. See ya next week!
