Switzer pitching improved markedly in the second round of the 1999 SWBA campaign, leading to a much improved overall team performance.  The staff yielded an average of 4.36 runs per game, easily low enough to give the Switzer attack an opportunity to bury opponents.   Behind the improvement was an increased reliance by Manager Pat Burroughs on the bullpen.  The key to the second round surge was a 10-game win streak reeled off to start the round, which included consecutive sweeps of Tempe, Kodiak, and Wagram.  The momentum tailed off thereafter, with Oklahoma treading water at 6-6.

While the pitching was good enough to win, the offense was terrific as usual, scoring an average of 7.36 runs per game and bringing the season total to 355 runs.  Enjoying MVP-type campaigns thus far are centerfielder Ray Lankford, catcher Ivan Rodriguez, and designated hitter Juan Gonzalez, all of whom are creating at or above 10 runs per 27 outs.  Longtime Switzer stars Frank Thomas and Robin Ventura continue to scuffle, though they both picked up the pace somewhat in round 2.

The pitching standouts are all bullpen, led by Juan Acevedo and Tom Gordon, each sporting an ERA near 1.50.   Gordon has saved 13 games and Acevedo has chipped in with 2 victories while eating up valuable innings while the Oklahoma offense gets cranked up.

Despite the positive team performance thus far, the stubborn San Diego Rangers refuse to go away, lurking a mere 3 games behind heading into round 3.  San Diego has been powered by a stellar 20-10 road record.  Continued intelligent use of the deep Oklahoma bullpen by Manager Burroughs will be the key to the success of the Switzers in the coming rounds.  Round 3 will include 8 key ballgames versus 2nd-place San Diego.  Much ground may be gained or lost in that home-and-home matchup...
